Scene Two: King Dasharatha (Rama’s dad) decides it is time to give the throne to Rama, his oldest son and retire to the forest to seek moksha. Everyone is pleased because this plan fulfills the rules of dharma because an eldest son should rule and if a son can take over one’s responsibilities, then one’s last years may be spent in a search for moksha. Queen Kaikeyi is very angry and wants her son (Bharata) to rule. She forces Dasharatha to banish Rama for fourteen years and to crown Bharata.

King Dasharatha: (to Queen Kaikeyi) I’ve decided that it is time for me to give the throne to my eldest son, Rama. This will fulfill the rules of dharma because my eldest son should rule and take over my responsibilities, so that I can spend the last years of my life in search for moksha.
Queen Kaikeyi: Are you kidding me?! How dare you say that! Rama is NOT going to be king Bharata, our amazing son will be! I demand that Rama be banished to the forest for fourteen years and Bharata will be crowned!

Scene Three: Dasharatha is devastated and cannot tell Rama the news himself, so Kaikeyi does it. Rama is content with banishment because he is always obedient, so Rama, Sita, and Lakshman set out for the forest.

King Dasharatha: I’m too scared and nervous to tell Rama the news, I’m devastated by what you’re making me do!
Queen Kaikeyi: Fine then I will tell him... (walks over to Rama) Rama you will not be inheriting the throne any longer. My son, Bharata, will be and you are now banished into the forest for fourteen years! Do you understand?
Rama: (sadly) Yes, I understand. I will leave tomorrow.
(show Rama, Sita, and Lakshman walking off into the forest)

Rakshasa princess: Ravana, today I saw the most beautiful princess, Sita who lives in the forest.
Ravana: We must come up with a plan to abduct and capture this beautiful girl. She will be mine!

Scene Six: Sita, Rama, and Lakshman are sitting around and a magical golden deer runs by and Rama and Laksham go off to hunt it. Before they leave they draw a protective circle around Sita where she is only safe if she does not step outside of the circle. Ravana then arrives (appearing as a holy man begging alms) causes Sita to step outside of the circle to give him food and he grabs her and takes her to his kingdom.

(Golden deer runs by)
Lakshman: Is that a golden deer?
Sita: It’s so beautiful!
Rama: Let’s go Lakshman! We’ll catch it, but before we go we must draw a protective circle around Sita. You will be safe as long as you don’t step outside of the circle.
(Rama and Lakshman run off and Sita sits inside the protective circle, Ravana appears.)
Ravana: Hello, I am a poor holy man do you have any food you could spare me? I’m starving!
Sita: Of course! Let me get it for you.
(Sita steps out of the protective circle and Ravana grabs her by the arm and takes her away. Rama and Lakshman return and look at the empty protective circle)
Rama: WHERE DID SITA GO?!
Lakshman: It must have been the evil Ravana we must go and safe her!
